History It is thought that Baltimore Town, now known as Baltimore County, was established around the latter part of 1658, though there is no documentation from that period to verify this. Beginning as a huge area, it was once comprised of land that includes areas presently known as Baltimore City, Harford, Cecil and Kent Counties, parts of present-day Carroll and Howard Counties. The first county seat was in “Old Baltimore” on the Bush River in today’s Harford County. The County was named after Lord Baltimore, Cecilius Calvert. In 1850, it was decided that Baltimore County would separate from Baltimore City. This brought about the necessity for a separate county town in which to house the courthouse. Towsontown was chosen as this place, becoming the county seat. By 1857 there was a courthouse and jail in Towsontown, whose name has since been shortened to Towson. Towson remains the county seat today. Agriculture was the first successful occupation of residents of this area. The first crop grown for business was tobacco, and then wheat. Iron furnaces began being built in the early 1730s as a means of creating “pig iron” for the British. A network of roads was established making it easier to commute to farmlands in nearby Pennsylvania. In 1772, a paper industry was established in the northern part of the region. This variety of occupations resulted in a steady growth of population. Many remarkable events have taken place throughout the history of Baltimore County. One such event was when George Washington’s and Lafayette’s troops were seen marching along the Philadelphia Road on their way to battle Cornwallis in Yorktown, Virginia. The county was raided by Confederate forces during the Civil War. Residents of Baltimore County chose opposing sides during the Civil War; many prominent men volunteered for the Confederacy, while for the most part the common man volunteered for the Union. Lincoln’s funeral train passed through the county, garnering genuine sympathy from many. Multiple cotton and wool factories were built by the 1800s, as were distilleries and bigger iron furnaces. Hard-surfaced roads and railroads were built. Trolley car lines and horse car lines brought a huge growth in the populations of Towson, Parkville, Pikesville, and Catsonville. Suburbia invaded many large estates as development of row houses took over dairy farms. In 1887, Sparrows Point was established as the local steel plant and shipyard. In the 1900s, manufacturing of aircraft and electrical products increased greatly. After World War II, people who had come to work at Sparrows Point during the war found new jobs and permanently relocated to Baltimore County. This, combined with many moving here to escape the fast pace of the city made for an unforeseen growth in county population. Baltimore County is a thriving community to this day.
