Colleges

Bowie State University ~ A member of the University System of Maryland, Bowie State University voices a dedication “to the advancement of knowledge through teaching, research, and service.” Degrees offered here include bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. This public comprehensive university stresses the importance of service to the community, both locally and globally. A liberal arts education is offered at Bowie State, with concentration placed on the science, technology, teacher education, business, and nursing disciplines. Thirteen athletic teams are available to students, as are numerous groups and organizations, helping to instill the importance of social interaction and service. Student-teacher ratio is 17:1, ensuring that students are afforded the necessary attention to enable them to fully grasp what is taught. An impressive 92 percent of full-time faculty members possess a master’s degree in their chosen fields, while 60 percent hold PhDs. Bowie State was founded in 1865, and is one of the oldest Historically Black Colleges/Universities in Maryland. Prince George’s Community College ~ In reading on the website of Prince George’s Community College (PGCC), you come across this line on the President’s page: “Opportunity, Preparation, and Success, One Student at a Time!” This seems to sum up all of the ambitions of the highly-qualified faculty and staff of this two-year college. Fostering student success by providing affordable, flexible quality education is what PGCC is all about. Two academic programs are offered: a Transfer Program for those interested in pursuing a four-year degree, and career programs for those looking to garner technical skills for entry or re-entry into the workforce. Many of the credits earned in the career programs are transferrable to four-year institutions as well. More than 100 programs of study are offered in five divisions: Social Sciences and Business, Learning Foundations, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Division.
